MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Conversion Programme: Modules 7 and 8

From 2011 the full course being provided by Persona is an MSc qualification in Counselling and Psychotherapy. The Post-Graduate Diploma will continue to account for Modules 1-6 and the additional MSc element will be Modules 7 and 8. The two additional modules will be offered as “stand-alone” units available to students from any University who have completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling and to all graduates of the Persona Diploma. These modules will support counsellors to strengthen their professional practice and deepen their knowledge and understanding. The details of the Persona/ University of Stirling MSc Programme have been finalised and applications will be processed through the Persona office.

It has been important to the ethos of this course that the development of these two modules stays true to the Person-Centred roots of Persona and builds on the content, the philosophy and the approach to learning which characterises the Diploma programme. The aim has been to strike a balance between staying true to Person-Centred principles while also recognising a responsibility to stretch and grow the Person-Centred approach from the early roots laid down by Rogers and others. It is also time that the fuller course programme recognised that the term “psychotherapy” is appropriate in relation to the training which students undertake at Persona.

MODULE 7 - INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY

Integrative Psychotherapy is a Persona designed and delivered module. It will require attendance at the course (hosted at Newbattle Abbey College)

The Module seeks to create a learning environment in which participants explore the two therapeutic areas of Focussing and Mindfulness: principally this exploration will be experiential in nature. At the same time there will be a series of articles which students will be required to read and discuss at each meeting: this exploration will be academic in nature and timetabled as “Study groups”.

The module will emphasise the importance of each student being responsible for their own learning journey and the role of the facilitators is to support the learner on that journey. In effect this means, as before, each person’s thoughts and reactions to the content is valid and to be respected and the learning environment will be one which  facilitates the dialogue between the student and the approach (Focussing, Mindfulness) so that it becomes an informed and supported dialogue.

Due to the experiential nature of this module, the number of participants is limited to 16.

The details of the programme for 2011 are as follows:

MODULE 8 – RESEARCH IN COUNSELLING

Research in Counselling is a University designed and delivered module and will be distance learning and require only 1 day attendance at Stirling.

During this day students receive topic specific teaching with a drop in session for help with IT issues if required.  This is followed by ten weeks of online learning using a specialised designed website on Web CT and two weeks of independent study dedicated to the development of the final assignment

This module introduces key theoretical concepts in counselling research drawing on the more established health and social care research literature.  It examines research design, epistemology, methodology, data collection methods and data analysis frameworks. Particular attention to ethical issues, including consent is covered in this module. It takes students through the research process but does not require a dissertation; it is designed to support the students’ ability to understand and undertake aspects of the research process. It provides the student with a practical understanding of the research process with consideration of all aspects of research design, from the theoretical to the practical. A theoretical understanding of research will be promoted through learning about epsitomology and methodology while an overview of the research process is demonstrated through the development of a comprehesive research proposal based on a topic selected according to the individual students’ interests.

The module will be assessed through two written assignments.  The formative assignment will be 2500 words long and will involve students undertaking an analysis of secondary data. The summative assignment (4000 words) will be a research proposal.

Module 8 begins in February 2012 and runs till June 2012.

Total cost for Module 8 is £815

The delivery of the course will be carried out by:

In addition, it is anticipated that upon completion of Module 8 the participants will come together for a day or a half-day (end of June 2012) to review the experience and celebrate their completion. The details of that final meeting will be negotiated with the participants who are involved.
